An afternoon in Cinque Terra - which town to visit??
Two couples with an afternoon to shop and eat in the CT area. Which town will leave the most lasting impression? Shopping and spectacular views are the most important factors.

Yes, do you mean the Cinque Terre or just somewhere on the coast (somewhat) nearby?
What time of year? In high season summer, the "most lasting impression" of any CT town might be the crowds.
Where are you coming from and later heading to? How are you traveling?

I don't think shopping would be that great in any of the Cinque Terre villages (unless things have changed radically since I was there). And views implies elevation - all bar one town are at sea level. Certainly the coastal views from the path between the towns is very scenic but not sure whether you are actually doing any hiking.

'An Afternoon' . . . where are you coming from and how are you traveling . . . Oh I see Jean asked the same thing. The Cinque Terre really isn't an 'afternoon sort of place' unless you are staying in or very near the CT.

I think Riomaggiore is most dramatic. Vernazza is most gracious and classic, but a flood wiped out ground level shops in 2011 and to me, the rebuild is sadly plain and commercial, with lots of bland pricey shops and eats. You should seriously do both. It's only a few minutes on the train between the two. First, Riomaggiore for some stunning views, then Vernazza to hang out.

My post here is mainly for anyone thinking about a day trip to the CT. On our trip in 2012 we really wanted to see the CT and for a variety of reasons knew this would most likely be our only chance so we opted for a day trip from Asti. Of course it was not ideal but we had a good time. Scroll down to post #76 in the link below to see a description of our day.

Unfortunately the easiest and most accessible path in the Cinque Terre, the Via dell'Amore between Riomaggiore and Manarola, has been closed since a landslide in 2012. It is due to reopen in 2024.
