Best Caribbean Island for Person with Limited Mobility

Hi.

I’m trying to find an island that my mom, who has bad knees, can enjoy without discomfort. She does NOT use a wheelchair but cannot walk long distances.

Would love a mix of snorkeling, scenery, history, and culture.

Please advise, if possible! I know it might be a difficult ask.

We considered Dominica, Bonaire, St. Vincent, and St. Lucia for ourselves, but for a person with limited mobility, I fear Dominica, especially, would not be ideal.

Your instincts are spot on, give Dominica a pass. It’s an eco-tourist delight but just about everything involves plenty of hiking and snorkeling is not on of the island’s strong points

St. Vincent and St. Lucia will have lots of scenery, history and culture but both islands are quite mountainous so many points of interest may be a bit difficult for your mother to reach. Snorkeling is OK around parts of St. Lucia but somewhat lacking on St. Vincent.

Bonaire has the best snorkeling of the islands on your list and it is relatively flat so getting around will be much easier for your mother. The island’s drawback is it very arid and lacks the lush natural beauty of the other islands on your list.

You might want to look at Barbados or Antigua. Both have plenty of good scenery, good historical and cultural backgrounds, some snorkeling and will be somewhat easy for a parson with limited mobility to navigate.

You’ll also find good snorkeling in the US and British Virgin Islands. They’ll also have the scenery, culture and history you are seeking. You’ll have to compromise a bit on mobility access in some places but you’ll still find plenty of things your mother can do without too much stress.

One caveat - most islands in the Caribbean are not as handicap friendly as the US and European countries so do expect some challenges no mater which island you choose.

I too thought of Barbados when I read your post.
There is history to explore, nice beaches, good food, etc. You might want to look into renting a walker for her while there.
